Thanks for the note, I love hearing from people interested in funeral service. Based on what you’re telling me though, you will not be able to obtain an embalmers license based on interest while keeping your current day job. I noticed your email was from within Canada. Depending where abouts you live, you may be able to take a course in embalming however you will absolutely not be able to practice the skill. Why? You must be a registered apprentice to start practicing. According to Canadian law, in order to be an apprentice and work towards your license you must be employed by a funeral provider, be registered with a recognized school of funeral service, and also be registered with the industry training authority to log your apprenticeship hours...and that’s just to name a few criteria. The embalming hours are accumulated during regular working hours where you are taught under an experienced mentor - I believe you need about 1800 hours or 3600 if you get funeral director and embalming licenses. Funeral homes do not issue licenses, government does. Even after obtaining the license I believe you need to be associated with a funeral home, plus take courses to gain credit to maintain and renew your license after every few years. If you ever want a change in careers though, I highly recommend this profession.

I just discovered your blog today as I too, am interested studying funeral services education, go as far a getting an embalmer's license, but I plan do it all just for interest. Thus, I would be more than willing to PAY to work in a funeral home as an embalming apprentice. Also I plan to keep my regular day job. Any suggestions/advice? Thanks.

This is so interesting! I can't believe the timing..I had an interview in a funeral directors today and have second one next week. I'm in England and it's not so hands on at this place, maybe the odd bit of lippy or jewellery. Don't think I could handle all the prepping you're learning about. I was just looking for some advice/info to help with the competancy interview next week. Will be checking your website out again, it's fascinating...but dreading seeing any kiddies as I have 3 small boys of my own. But I won't let my head even go there!

I am so glad I found your website
I have always wanted to work in the funeral business and finally in my late fifties, I aplied for and was hired by a funeral home close by me.

I have been in the medical field and retail for 25 or more years and have had many of my friends and family members pass away in the last 3 years.

I took care of my mom for many months and cared for her here in my home with the help of Hospice. When she died in March, I called this particular home and they were wonderful
so now here I am
I start tuesday....and will be starting the same way you did
looking forward to you posts...
